If one researches Annie Proulx,
there is not much to find because she is no Stephen King or John Grisham. Writers such as these are interesting and
keep the reader wanting more, but Proulx’s stories are fables in a way, filled
with symbolism and life lessons. Some of
these lessons are confusing and a little absurd, but all of them are connected
because of their harsh reality.
One of her harsher stories is Brokeback Mountain, which became one of her claims
to fame. This particular story is one of
her only ones based on love. The problem
with this love is that it is between two men.
Although controversial and somewhat disturbing, the story struck critics
forcefully enough for a movie to be based on it. While the movie features good looking actors
and beautiful landscapes, Proulx’s purpose behind the story is to show that
sometimes even the strangest of circumstances can bring about love. Unfortunately, however, it goes with the
common them of her stories and ends in tragedy.
